A lot of people try to implement Adsense in order to make money on their websites. Theoretically, it’s a good idea. The biggest problem you’ll be faced with is how traffic to the site relates to how much you can make. You’ve probably seen articles about how people make thousands of dollars per month with the popular advertising platform. But this success isn’t instantaneous. In fact, it’s more than likely going to take you a great deal of effort and marketing.

How Traffic Affects Adsense Income
Adsense is the Google-sponsored platform that will pay you for advertising companies on your website. For me, I am paid when someone clicks an ad. However, some of my websites will also generate revenue from merely showing the add to visitors. Unfortunately, I don’t make a lot of money on impressions because I don’t have a lot of traffic just yet.
More Visitors Equals Greater Potential
When you’re just starting out, it can take quite a long time before you meet Google’s payout threshold of $100. When you have a handful of people visiting every day, it could literally take years. However, even the smallest of sites can create greater levels of traffic as time goes on. The more people who visit the site, the greater is the potential that one of them will click an advertisement. If your site manages to display pay-per-impression ads, more visitors will also increase your income.
How Many Visitors Will it Take?
The number of visitors you need in order to make a significant amount from Adsense depends on several factors. The numbers for one website will often be completely different than another. To say with certainty that you could make a specific amount of money per month is faulty because there are so many variables that come into play. Ad values, content, quality of visitors and more will contribute to your overall income.
Your Industry Niche
The niche of your website will directly affect the kind of ads you display. Some industries pay more per unit than others. For instance, this website generates an average of $0.10 per 1000 visitors. My fitness website will average $1.74 for the same amount of traffic. If you’re writing about topics that are less interesting according to the majority of the populace on the Internet, you’ll make less.
In order for this website to make $100 per month, it would need one million visitors. Of course, this is also based on the past six months of averages. Until the popularity of the site grows, the potential for income will fluctuate greatly. Needless to say, I won’t be quitting my full-time job just yet based purely on Adsense.
Popularity Matters
The popularity of your website matters when trying to make money through any ad-revenue platform. Within the first six months, it’s very unlikely you’ll make a significant amount of money. In fact, it could possibly take years before you begin to see a regular monthly payout from Google.
Then Why Use Adsense?
The reason I use Adsense is because there is great potential for income. It takes less than five minutes to set up and requires no real effort to maintain. It’s one of those things you can set up and forget about for weeks on end. Your focus should be on building a website with content to drive traffic. Adsense is essentially the proverbial cherry on top of that process.
What Can You Do to Make More Money on Adsense?
In reality, the best method to make more money on Adsense is to make a website people want to visit. You don’t have any real control over which ads get displayed or how much money you’ll make per click or impression. As long as you can develop a popular site with quality visitors, because paid hits often don’t interact with the webpages, your Adsense account will begin to grow over time. Once you place Adsense ads, you really want to focus your effort on the following in order to make more money:
- Ad Placement: Your ads need to be displayed in areas that people will see them.
- Quality Content: Quality content brings quality visitors who are more likely to click on those ads.
- Marketing: Marketing your website gets it out there to be seen to drive traffic. This includes search engine optimization and social media marketing platforms.
I have no doubt there are people out there who make a great deal of money with ad revenue systems like Adsense. Myself, I have yet to see a payout from Google since 2006. Then again, I’ve only put real effort into my websites for just over six months. Since I’ve been focusing more on the domains I own, I have seen a significant growth in traffic.
To answer the question, “How much traffic do I need to be successful with Adsense?” the best answer I can come up with is: it depends. There are simply too many factors that play into how much any one specific website makes. While you can reach for the sky and hope for the best, don’t expect to get rich quick. It will take a lot of effort on your part to build a website that is financially stable enough to carry itself. Try the system for yourself and get a report about how much your site generates per 1000 visitors. It may be something worth the few minutes it takes to implement.
