Thanks to platforms like Amazon and Barnes & Noble, virtually anyone can publish a book without needing an agent or publishing house. As long as you follow their guidelines about inappropriate content, you can see your book in print within days.

However, the success of your book still hinges on your ability to weave a story and hold the attention of your audience.

Anyone can write a book, but not everyone will write a good book.

What Goes Into Self-Publishing a Book?

  • Writing the book and being able to export it in supported file types.
  • Proper editing techniques, which can cost quite a bit.
  • A good book cover for all three versions you want to publish (eBook, paperback, and hardcover).
  • A handle of marketing tactics because no one will buy the book if they don’t know it exists.

You can do everything yourself and publish a good book without spending a single dime. However, some services will either save you a lot of time or present a more professional manuscript.

Perhaps the two most important expenses you may want to consider is that of editing and marketing.

You Don’t Need a Degree

Some think that you need a degree of some kind to be a good author. In reality, a good author is one who can relay a story that captivates the reader. And you don’t need a fine arts, bachelor’s, or master’s to do that.

On the other hand, taking college courses in creative writing will greatly benefit your storytelling in a shorter amount of time than sifting through search results in Google.

Market Saturation is a Pain

Because self-publishing is much easier than querying an agent, the market for books on platforms like Amazon is exceptionally saturated. That means people have thousands of options to choose from when looking for specific genres and it’s easy for your book to be buried among them.

This is why a strong marketing strategy is ultimately important for a self-published author. In reality, you’ll probably spend more money on marketing than you will on any other service when publishing your book.
