When someone refers to WordPress as “self-hosted,” this means you’re paying for a web host account with the WordPress platform installed on it. It’s much different than the WordPress.com platform, and in most cases, a lot cheaper.
For example, let’s say you use GreenGeeks Web Hosting to build your website. You’d then install the WordPress platform onto that account. GreenGeeks is kind of like the digital “land” and your WordPress site is a house you’ve built upon it.
Huge Cost Difference
When using self-hosted WordPress, you’re usually paying less per month than a cup of coffee at your favorite shop. In the case of GreenGeeks, it’ll only run you about $106 every three years, which breaks down to about $2.94 per month.
And GreenGeeks isn’t the only self-hosting WordPress company. Most major web hosts support WordPress, considering its massive popularity.
Limitless Customization
When you’re using self-hosted WordPress, you can customize the site to fit your exact needs. And if you learn a bit of CSS, PHP, or HTML, there is virtually nothing you can’t do with your website.
Not to mention the fact that you have absolute control over content and monetization methods.
Some companies, such as Wix, limit what you can do on the platform. That’s not the case when self-hosting your site. This is one of the biggest reasons why WordPress is used on more than 43% of all websites on the Internet.
Incredible Flexibility
I’ve mentioned how you can turn WordPress into any kind of site you need. But even if you don’t learn programming, plugins and themes for WordPress make it one of the most flexible content management systems in the world.
For instance, using a plugin like WooCommerce gives you a powerful platform for adding eCommerce to your site. As an author, I use plugins to show my work-in-progress in the sidebar to keep readers apprised of how my next book is coming along.
There are plugins available for just about any purpose you can think of to boost engagement for your site.
As for themes, most will come with easy-to-use settings and tools to change the appearance to fit your niche or style.
