A citation is a vital component of your content, and a generator can help with formatting. Although it’s important you learn how to format citations yourself, generators can help cut time while looking professional, whether you’re writing an essay or a blog post.

Of course, blogs don’t necessarily need a sources section as you would see in a college-level essay. Simply linking to the source’s page is enough for the average folk as well as the Google algorithm.

However, you will get docked points if your citations are a mess in college. And some professors are exceptionally anal about how they appear in your paper.

11 Free Citation Generators You Can Try Today

I’m only looking at generators that are absolutely free, and not those that are wrapped in a trial period. I believe students are getting the short end of the stick as it is, and don’t want to add to anyone’s debt.

In a lot of cases, citation generators are extras linked to other services. In those cases, I’m only going to highlight how the citation creator works and mention some of the other tools you might be interested in for that particular platform.

So, what are some free citation generators that you can start using right now?

1. Citation Machine

Citation Machine Use

Among my top picks for a free sources generator is Citation Machine. I was turned on to this app by my girlfriend, who has been using it for her master’s and PhD degrees for quite some time. So, I have a bit of a higher level of trust for this as opposed to others.

Citation Machine provides an extremely long list of format types, covering a wide scope of writing. The app also has one of the longest source lists I’ve seen from citation creators on the Internet.

When inputting your source, Citation Machine highlights fields that are necessary for a proper reference. Everything else is good, but often not necessary, depending on the paper and instructor/professor.

One of the perks of this product is that you don’t need to create an account. You can visit the site and begin building your Sources page or section immediately.

The downside of Citation Manager is the sheer volume of ads on the page. It’s a free citation tool; it’s going to display advertisements to make some money. But the developers went a bit extreme, I think.

Benefits of Using Citation Machine:

  • No account necessary
  • Limited writing assistant app
  • Detailed information regarding format types
  • Extremely long list of source types
  • Extremely long list of citation format types

Price to Upgrade Citation Machine and Why: You can upgrade to Citation Machine Plus for $9.95 per month, which gives you access to various grammar tools and the plagiarism checker while removing the ads.

However, the plagiarism checker tool has a few issues, such as getting stuck on the “Checking” screen.

Chegg Services a-Plenty

In case you’re wondering, the Cite This For Me and EasyBib platforms are identical to Citation Machine, only with different site colors. That’s probably because they were created by the same organization, Chegg.

I’m not going to list them in this post, considering they all have the same functions and advertisements.

2. QuillBot

Using QuillBot Citations

Another great tool to use for writing of all kinds is QuillBot. In this instance, I’m pointing out the citation creator part of the app. It works quite well and has a few extra functions that other free citation tools lack.

QuillBot provides a basic search field for your specific source and will scan through all kinds of content to help you find the right one. Or, you can input citations manually, which provides even more options for searching content.

You can edit the citations, copy individual references or the entire list, open references in a new tab, or follow the suggestions QuillBot provides, such as including when the online source was accessed.

A feature I think is worth noting is how QuillBot also gives you an option to add proper in-text citations. You can copy the parenthetical or narrative citation and paste it into your paper.

Yes, you will get docked points by most instructors and professors if your in-text citations are incorrect. So, it’s a worthwhile function for writing essays.

The best part is that you can do all this without advertisements flashing on your screen.

Benefits of Using QuillBot:

  • QuillBot has a host of writing tools in addition to citation creation
  • Supports current citation version types
  • Export citations as a Word document
  • Upload PDFs for direct referencing
  • QuillBot integrates with a host of platforms for various writing tasks

Price to Upgrade QuillBot and Why: You can upgrade QuillBot for $99.96 per year, and it comes with a wide assortment of expanded tools from its free version. This includes AI detection, improved grammar checking functionality, and the plagiarism checker.

3. SciSpace

SciSpace Writing Assistant

SciSpace is a writing assistant that has a built-in citation generator. The app has a collection of tools that you’d find in most writing platforms. However, I’m merely focusing on the citation generator today.

Although the title page for the cite tool is labeled as “APA,” SciSpace supports a variety of format types. So, disregard the title of the page. It works well for other formats.

The citation tool for SciSpace is quite plain and generic compared to others. The app will put together a list of sources, but it doesn’t provide a lot of flair or extra capabilities. SciSpace provides the in-text citations you can paste into your paper, but the tool is somewhat lackluster in both functionality and layout.

The only real issue I could find with the citation tool is that you can’t copy the entire list of sources. You have to export them as either a Word document or BibTeX file. You can copy each source individually, though.

In a nutshell, SciSpace is yet another AI-heavy writing assistant that provides generative text as well as data analysis. Although I’m not interested in AI-driven tools, a lot of folks are, and SciSpace has quite a few of them.

You’ll need to create an account on SciSpace if you use more than one citation.

Benefits of Using SciSpace:

  • Can important your library from Zotero
  • Share your content library with others, perfect for collaborations
  • A variety of tools, both conventional and AI-driven, for managing content
  • Available Chrome extension to help you find and record online sources
  • Integrates with ChatGPT for research

Price to Upgrade SciSpace and Why: The cost of SciSpace starts at $12 per month and provides unlimited access to a variety of its tools, including the citation generator. The premium plan will also expand the file types you can download, including RIS, CSV, BIB, Excel, and XML.

4. BibGuru

BibGuru

BibGuru is another free citation creator that comes loaded with source types and formats for a variety of content. You can easily edit the citations or enter them manually, depending on your needs.

You can either create a free account to keep track of your source pages or you can use BibGuru without signing in. However, the source page for your project will only be available for seven days.

If you need the in-text formats, BibGuru also provides them according to each of your sources while also providing a plain list of references. One of the highlights of these features is the ability to drag and drop the sources in the list for organization.

As with most generators, you can download your citations in a Word document or simply copy them to your clipboard. You can also download them for BibTeX and RIS.

Perhaps the only real drawback to using BibGuru for free is the volume of advertisements. While most are just visual annoyances, some have shifted the tools as I tried to click a couple of options. This resulted in my visiting the advertiser inadvertently.

Benefits of Using BibGuru:

  • Enabling dark mode is helpful
  • Source page and in-line citations available
  • Don’t need an account to use the tool
  • Supports 10 languages

Price to Upgrade BibGuru and Why: You can upgrade your free account for just $4.99 per month. At that point, you can organize your projects into folders, access your files virtually anywhere, and remove the advertisements from the page.

If you plan on using BibGuru for an extended period of time, it might be worth the five bucks just to get rid of the ads.

5. MyBib

MyBib Citation Generator

The MyBib citation creator has a somewhat basic layout. However, it has several components that are not common in other generators.

First of all, you’re able to share the page you’re working on through a link or email. This is great for those who are working on papers together and need access to the same reference page.

MyBib provides the layout for a very long list of styles, including the most popular of MLA, APA, and Chicago. This gives it some flexibility for those working on all kinds of papers and content. You also have access to change the typography of the page to match your needs.

When you’re ready to use the reference list, you have a lot of options available. Not only does MyBib give you the option to save the sources to your computer’s clipboard, but you can also save as a Word file, send to Google Drive, email, or print the list directly.

MyBib also integrates with BibTex, Mendeley, and Zotero.

If you need to reference a web page you’re reading, the MyBib Google extension will highlight the page’s credibility while giving you the option to save the reference to your project.

Benefits of Using MyBib:

  • Clean and minimalist workspace without advertisements
  • Dark mode setting
  • No account necessary to create a resource page
  • Free account setup to save your source lists
  • Imports RIS and BibTeX files

MyBib is a completely free citation generator that has no paid services to upgrade.

6. ZoteroBib

ZoteroBib Citation Generator

The Zoterobib app is quite basic compared to other apps, but it does the job well enough. If you don’t need all of the features and advertisements of other free citation generators, this is probably the tool for you.

Simply input and search the source, and the app will do the rest.

There are thousands of styles of formatting to choose from, and you can copy the entire list to your computer’s clipboard or each source individually. You can even change the “Bibliography” text to anything you need, such as “Works Cited” or “Sources.”

The manual entry field has everything you need, should you be unable to search or find your source online.

Zoterobib is a free resource from Zotero, a free organization app you can use on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. Essentially, it’s a massive storage system for all of your research regarding any kind of writing project.

If you’re using a lot of online sources from Google Chrome, you can also install the Zotero Connector extension. This lets you save virtually any online source to your Zotero app to use as references and source citing.

Benefits of Using Zotero:

  • Download the sources in RTF, HTML, RIS, BibTeX, or save to Zotero directly
  • No annoying ads for those who just want a citation generator
  • Part of Zotero, which has a lot of functions for saving all research data
  • Clean and easy-to-use interface

Zoterobib has no upgrades, as it is a completely free citation generator. The only product you can pay to upgrade with Zotero is their online storage platform.

7. Grammarly

Grammarly Citation Generator

Grammarly is another popular writing assistant with a free citation generator you can use without signing up for an account. However, it’s not as flexible as other citation tool alternatives, only providing three popular source formats.

Yet, those three are the most used for citing work in a variety of institutions and fields of study.

The citation tool from Grammarly is quite basic. You’ll have to enter the information yourself, even if the source is a webpage. This is a contradiction to how others operate, as Grammarly doesn’t pull the metadata from online sources.

Another slight failing is that you can only copy and paste one reference at a time. Instead of building a list and then copying the entire collection, you’ll have to go back and forth to list your sources.

One of the saving graces of Grammarly, though, is that it provides the in-text citation you can copy and paste directly into your essay or other writing project.

What would make this tool better is if it were integrated with Grammarly’s writing app. As it stands today, you’ll keep two browser tabs open and jump back and forth when you reference a source.

Benefits of Using Grammarly:

  • Isn’t overloaded by advertisements
  • Creates in-text citations for APA, MLA, and Chicago style sources
  • Free Grammarly account comes with grammar and spelling checking

Price to Upgrade Grammarly and Why: The Pro version of Grammarly starts at $12 per month and gives you access to more extended functionality for grammar checking and plagiarism checking. But it doesn’t really do much for citation management.

8. Scribbr

Scribbr

The Scribbr citation generator is a free tool that formats in popular styles and delivers a few extras that are uncommon in the industry.

You can sync to Google Docs, export the source list to Word, export to LaTeX, or copy directly to the clipboard and paste the references into a word processor of your choice.

Scribbr also comes with a variety of extra tools to help you write content. For example, you can use a plagiarism checker after creating your free account. However, this version is somewhat limited, only showing the risk of plagiarism, AI content detection percentage, and basic grammar issues.

Scribbr also has a Chrome extension that allows you to turn any online reference into a citation. Just visit an online resource and click the icon to turn the page into a source. From here, you can add it to your list on the platform, edit, or copy the text directly from the extension.

Unfortunately, the ads sometimes make Scribbr difficult to use, as they’ll shift the screen at inopportune times. This makes it difficult to click on certain functions.

Benefits of Using Sribbr:

  • Can cite manually and upload PDFs
  • Typography adjustments for perfect copy and pasting
  • No account necessary to create reference lists
  • Chrome extension works great for citing online sources
  • Various additional writing tools are available

Price to Upgrade Scribbr and Why: Scribbr doesn’t have a monthly subscription fee platform. Instead, you buy individual products as you need them. This includes human editing services, AI usage, and more.

For instance, you can get a thorough plagiarism check of one paper for $19.95. This will also put your profile into an ad-free space.

9. Formatically

Formatically Citation Tool

The Formatically citation tool is among the most basic and stripped-down free generators I’ve come across. Don’t get me wrong, it works great if you need a quick reference page for your writing. But it doesn’t have a lot of the functionality of alternatives.

You’ll have access to the manual citation screen, which has all the entries you’ll need for most format types.

One thing that I’m not a fan of is how Formatically doesn’t give you the option to change format versions. And you’ll have to trust that the APA version is current. While you have access to MLA 8, APA, Chicago, and Harvard, it’s probably a good idea to verify Formatically is formatting them correctly before submitting your work.

Unfortunately, when I tried to export the file to Google Drive, nothing happened. I’m not sure if this is a problem with my browser or if the function doesn’t work. So, you may want to try it with your own account if you need that particular function.

I’m also not very impressed with Formatically comparing itself to the speed of other tools below the generator. For one thing, the comparisons are all against the advertisement-heavy Chegg services. This includes all of the “free generators” Chegg has scattered across the Internet, such as Citation Machine.

In other words, it’s not really a fair comparison against other citation tools.

Benefits of Using Formatically:

  • Very minimalist layout
  • No advertisements
  • Quick and easy way to format your sources

Formatically is a free instant citation tool with no upgrades available. However, you can pay for services such as professionally formatting essays. I don’t condone it, as I believe students should know how to write and structure their work. But it’s available should you need it.

10. Citefast

Citefast

If you just need APA, MLA, or Chicago formats, Citefast isn’t a bad choice for creating source citations. The screen is broken into two windows: one for entering the source and the other for Works Cited. It’s a simple layout that keeps everything on screen.

When creating the citations, you can copy them to your computer’s clipboard or export them to a Word document. What’s nice is that Citefast also provides in-text citations so you can add them to your content quite easily.

You don’t need to create an account to use the generator. However, a free account will store your source pages for future reference.

Another useful function of Citefast is that you’re also able to create a title page for your essay for specific formats. Enter the relevant information and just click “Create title page.” You’ll have to copy and paste the info into your paper, as this portion does not have a download feature.

Just beware of the ads. With how often they cycle on the site, it runs a tad slowly. Not to mention how the ads can be slightly annoying.

Benefits of Using Citefast:

  • In-text citations to use in your paper
  • Manual citations include all of the necessary fields
  • Long list of source types to research and use
  • Pastes the citations in 12-point, Times New Roman (standard for most curricula)

Citefast has no premium features to upgrade, as it’s a free platform. The organization generates revenue from ads and affiliate marketing, which is a great way to provide a free service while making it semi-lucrative.

11. Bibliography

Bibliography

The Bibliography citation generator is an easy tool to use. Adding a reference brings up a right-side window that gives you all the fields you’ll need to input the source material. Then, you can copy the list or export it as an MS Word file.

Bibliography also has a share option, which lets you distribute the URL to the citation you created. You can place this anywhere you can use a URL, such as in an email, social apps, or messaging apps.

Unfortunately, you cannot copy or export your citations unless you sign up for a free account. This is somewhat misleading, as Bibliography stated you can create citations without creating an account on the landing page.

Sure, you can create them, but you can’t use them in your paper.

Another drawback is that the Chrome extension for Bibliography has been removed because of a failure to follow Chrome’s “best practices.”

Bibliography Removed from Chrome
Chrome Extension Page on 12/19/2025

It had a pretty low rating anyway, especially compared to other citation extensions. This is a bit of a red flag for me, as it demonstrates a certain level of unprofessionalism.

Benefits of Using Bibliography:

  • Nice layout to add and edit sources
  • In-text citations available for your writing project
  • Keep track of all your source pages for free
  • Most popular citation formats available

There are no premium services specific to the Bibliography citation tool.

Bibliography seems more like an abandoned project. Even the extra Bibfy tool from the developer is riddled with problems and a lack of search capabilities. I might be removing this one later. It still works as a citation generator, but I don’t like promoting broken or defunct products.

Pros and Cons of a Citation Generator

Pros

  • Saves Time
  • Easy to Use
  • Often Covers Most Formats

Cons

  • Accuracy Problems
  • Limited Functionality (Sometimes)
  • Outdated Formatting Versions Possible

Saves Time

Citation generators can save you a great deal of time, especially if you have a long list of sources to cite. In many apps, you can simply download the source page and include it in your paper, ready to go.

If you only have one or two sources to cite, though, it might be easier and quicker to input the citation manually.

Easy to Use

As long as you have the necessary information regarding your source, it’s easy to cite. Some apps, like Citation Machine, will go so far as to highlight the “required” fields for a proper citation, according to the style you need.

Then, you can either copy or export the list of references and add them to your essay or writing project. The whole process is straightforward, as long as you verify the format is correct. You don’t want to use outdated formatting, especially if you’re writing a mid-term or final project.

Often Covers Most Formats

A lot of brands stay up-to-date on format styles while including them in the list of what you can create. Perhaps the three biggest include MLA, APA, and Chicago, depending on your field of study, the school, and your professor or instructor.

Some of the generators in this list will include virtually every style format you can think of, making it highly versatile for all kinds of writing.

Accuracy Problems

When citing sources, keep in mind that automatic generators may have accuracy issues, especially when it comes to webpages and online resources. This is often caused by incorrect or missing metadata from the website.

Always verify the citation generator provided the correct information. I’ve seen some web sources butcher the author fields of generators to the point where I had to input them manually. Not all websites are created equal.

Limited Functionality (Sometimes)

Some free citation creators are simply going to format and produce the citation itself. That is fine, in some cases. However, being able to organize, add annotations, or integrate with web browsers is ideal, which some may not include.

If you’re simply writing an essay, you probably don’t need all the fancy bells and whistles. As long as the citation is structured correctly, that’s all that matters in the end.

Well, that and how you cite the source in the text itself within the text.

Outdated Formatting Versions Possible

Not all brands keep their formatting tools up-to-date. And yes, there are instructors and professors out there who will dock you points by using an outdated version.

Always make sure you’re following your curriculum and that the source citation generator has what you need.

Take Time to Learn the Citation Formats

The best way to avoid complications when writing your paper or other writing project is to learn how to format the citation yourself. That way, you can identify when a generator is getting something wrong or if more information is needed.

That’s one of the reasons why I rarely use tools for tasks that I can’t do myself. I can quickly identify when an app is delivering something that is incomplete. Usually, I try different tools to save time – nothing more.

Besides, what if you’re testing or writing a paper and don’t have access to citation format generators? While it may be unlikely, always remember that the odds are never zero.

Not to mention that you’ll have more pride in yourself if you can create something like an APA-style citation without an app. Even the small victories can play a role in boosting self-confidence.

Once you learn the format of your specific citation format, use the generators to save you time.

Don’t use automated tools as a crutch. It could lead to an unhealthy reliance, which could ultimately affect your college experience, career, or various writing projects. That includes the overuse of AI-generated content and tools.

Need help writing your book? Knowing how to structure your manuscript can go a long way to providing a better exeperience for your readers. Take a look at the Reedsy Masterclass for How to Write a Novel. It was perhaps the most influential three months I’ve spent for crafting my books.

Always Cite Your Sources

Using a citation tool should be viewed as more of an extension of your skills, not a replacement. I know that there are plenty of styles out there, but the odds that you’ll use more than a few throughout your scholastic career are remote.

Well, that also highly depends on what you’re studying and the classes you’re taking.

Nonetheless, citation format generators are helpful tools, but it’s always best to learn the format yourself. As I said earlier, learning the format will let you identify when a tool is faulty.

Regardless, always cite your sources. Citing reputable sources creates trust, authority, and boosts your own reputation. Make sure the tools you use always work to that end.
