On June 16th, 2025, we’re going to try something a tad bit different. Not only will we be talking about writing, but we’re doing it from the perspective of setting up a role-playing game with DJ Cook. As this is something that greatly interests me, I’m looking forward to the conversation.
I’m a proponent of using games to accentuate novels, and I am currently developing a Neverwinter Nights module to coincide between my books, Kingmaker and Fury.
Besides, there is a lot of writing that goes into creating a full-featured RPG. This is especially true when you consider DMs and GMs are merely the narrator, much like how you structure a book.
A Bit About DJ Cook and Immane

Immane is a “high-fantasy” tabletop role-playing game. But it goes beyond the common theme of Dungeons & Dragons and similar offshoots. It’s based solely in horror. This means everything about the game is designed to be along that vein.
According to the Immane Patreon page, Immane is a cinematic game, which piques my interest. I write books very cinematically, as I envision what each scene would look like if it were a movie and then do my best to describe it. I’m curious to learn what DJ Cook means by “cinematic” tabletop game.
If it’s set up like I think it is, Immane is easily on my list of “must haves” for the house.
From what I’ve read and seen of Immane thus far, it reminds me of the Ravenloft domain in D&D, only dialed to 11 and not meant for kids. Ravenloft focuses on gothic horror, and some of the modules and books from that genre were spot-on. I’m hoping Immane has something similar involved.
It might be something I’ll have to fan-fic on Wattpad or Inkitt.
How Can You Help the Development of Immane?

Currently, you can sign up for the Immane: High-Fantasy Horror Patreon for free to get updates. However, DJ has a few monthly memberships and featured products to help support the game’s development.
I plan on doing a bit more by sharing it as often as I can. The game looks promising, and I would love to see it succeed. I just wish I had more money to throw at these kinds of developers. It takes an incredible amount of work to put together a rich and themed RPG. There are so many cogs turning at any given time that you need to consider. It goes far beyond just rolling some dice at a table.

Whether you’re into role-playing games or not, it’s all about writing. Come and hang out with us on June 16th at 7pm (MTN) on the WriterSanctuary YouTube channel and bring some questions along! It’s sure to be a great evening, especially with the group I have coming on the show.
It may give you some ideas for building your own games out of your books! I know I’m working on a few ideas myself.
