Affiliate marketing is one of the more popularized ways to make money online. A lot of people jump into it hoping to make a decent living. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way. In fact, it’s often more difficult than a lot of people think.
It’s not because the products or services are necessarily bad. In reality, the overall condition of your blog is going to greatly impact whether your affiliate links are going to do well or not.
What Influences Affiliate Marketing?
What if you follow all the suggestions of so-called “experts” and still can’t generate sales from your blog? Should you give up and try something different?
In fact, a lot of things can affect the success of affiliate marketing from your site. And some of them you can change today to engage shoppers.
Popularity of the Blog
The amount of traffic your website receives plays a part in how much money it’ll make, obviously. The more visitors you have, the more likely someone is going to buy something.
For instance, my health and fitness blog generates nearly 10 times the money as this website. Why is that? Because it also receives nearly four times the traffic and has a more engaged audience.
Display and banner ads have an average click-through-rate of just 0.05%. This means you need at least 2,000 visitors before someone clicks an affiliate link or banner.
And that one person may not even make a purchase.
Don’t assume that because you start a blog that you’ll be rolling in that ad and affiliate money over night. In reality, it can take months or even years for a blog to generate any real amount of income other than a few cents per day.
The amount of traffic you’ll need to replace a full-time income from affiliate marketing depends on the affiliates themselves and the industry.
The Content You Create
Part of the popularity of your blog is derived from the type of content you create. If no one wants to read your blog post, they’re not going to buy anything from your links.
A lot of forms of good content addresses a problem and then offers an actionable solution. If the affiliate marketing link is in relation to that solution, all the better.
In reality, the overall performance of your blog in search engines like Google correlates to how your affiliate marketing campaigns will perform. Remember, it’s the site’s visitors who buy products from your site.
The Niche of Your Blog
Some industries and topics simply perform better than others. For instance, it takes fewer visitors for my health and fitness blog to make one dollar than it does for my gaming website.
If the interest just isn’t there, people simply will not buy. Look at any established business that had to shut its doors because of a lack of interest. Blockbuster Video comes to mind as more people would rather watch digital streaming or use Redbox than rent a video from that particular company.
However, this doesn’t mean you can’t make money with any niche. It just means you would have to put in far more work to engage an audience that is too few and far between.
One thing you need to keep in mind is how many affiliate programs have a time constraints. For instance, Amazon will shut down an affiliate account if you don’t make a sale inside six months. Commission Junction is another one with similar restrictions.
This means you need to have a semi-popular site to generate income or be dropped from those programs. That is, unless you convince a friend to use your site and buy something every six months while you wait for visitors to start buying instead.
Link or Banner Placement
Where you place affiliate marketing links and banners also contribute to how successful those campaigns are. This means you need to know how people are viewing your website and if they are even seeing those ads.
A poor placement can easily mean that no one is seeing it, even if they truly would buy the product.
What Can You Do to Improve Affiliate Marketing Blog Campaigns?
Don’t get me wrong, it’s possible to create a successful blog which generates a great deal of money each month. However, it takes a lot of work and effort to get the site to that point.
Here are a few things you can do to improve how your campaigns perform.
Improve Writing Styles
One of the biggest ways to improve productivity of your site as well as affiliate marketing campaigns is to improve your content. Make it something people will want to read while affecting their decision to click an ad or buy a product.
Reviews are exceptionally useful when writing content to drive sales of a product. According to Statista, 84% of consumers have some form of trust in online reviews as much as a suggestion from a friend or family member.
This is especially effective if you show authenticity in the article and connect with the audience.
Out of the three blogs I maintain, tutorials are some of the most effective forms of content for bringing in traffic. If the affiliate marketing campaign relates to the tutorial, it vastly increases the chances of making a sale.
Just make sure you’re helping people solve a problem with detailed and easy-to-follow instructions.
Make the Content Relate to the Affiliate
An often-effective method to drive a click from the audience is to make content relevant to the product. For example, you could write an article about the best places to go fishing while showing a banner or link from a fishing supply business.
You wouldn’t show a banner for PC game controllers on a site about cooking.
Reconsider Where You Place Links and Banners
Placement of banners and links is more important than a lot of people think. You want affiliate marketing ads to be seen by your audience in a way that inspires them to click.
And don’t forget the impact of mobile devices on your site, either.
For instance, I generally displayed affiliates and AdSense campaigns on the right sidebar of my health and fitness site. As about 75% of my visitors are on mobile devices, these ads were rarely seen.
After moving ads to the middle of the actual content and at the end, I saw my income jump up by nearly double.
Use heatmap plugins and tools to show you what people are viewing on your site and adjust your placement strategy accordingly.
Share Your Content on Social Media
Sharing your content on social media helps drive traffic, build a follower base and makes people more aware of your blog. Again, it’s the visitors who are going to buy from your affiliate marketing links.
My point is to share your content as often as possible to generate traffic while improving the chances of making money from your links and banners. Just make sure you’re sharing content with groups and hashtags that are relevant to your content.
Affiliate Marketing Doesn’t Mean Instant Income
It’s possible to generate a full-time income from affiliate marketing, but don’t expect it to happen instantly. It takes a lot of effort to come up with a winning strategy for your campaigns.
