I see too many people give up on their dreams before they even try. All too often, people don’t like the immediate result and move on to the next project. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, unless it’s a life-long dream. Many are too engrossed with instant gratification that they don’t put in the effort to reach their aspirations. If you want more out of life, you need to at least put in the effort.
Getting More Out of Life Through Effort
Recently, I’ve been taking a good long look at my life and where I am at. Probably because I am pushing 40 and still don’t have a handle on what I want to be when I grow up. I started freelance writing because I enjoy it and the bills got paid. But isn’t there something more I can do to improve my life and get a handle on my various situations?
Failing vs. Learning
I bet a lot of people have the same ideas and concerns. What will separate success from failure is the amount of effort you put into any given project. A true failure is a situation which you don’t learn from. Otherwise, it becomes nothing more than a way to learn. If you take something from the experience, then how can that be a failure?
Doomed to Repeat Mistakes
The problem with a lot of people is that they don’t learn from these circumstances. They keep repeating the same patterns only to fail over and over again. I know this all too well. It’s like slamming your head against the wall and expecting it not to hurt with each crash.
It’s a life-long dream of mine to see my name on the spine of a novel. I would love nothing more than to fill up my bookshelves with my own volumes. This isn’t going to happen unless I try.
Many people won’t try to achieve their dreams because they fear failure. I can attest to how this might pose a problem. I constantly worry that I might not have what it takes to be a world-class writer. I don’t necessarily want to be on the New York Times Best Seller List, but I do worry about committing so much time to a project when I know I can make money as a ghostwriter. And that is where a lot of people may start to fail.
Affording to Try
It seems like a lot of dreams center around money. I need a certain amount per day in order to pay the bills. If I commit too much time to a novel, then it makes it more difficult to afford living. I suppose my biggest concern is the time I put into writing a novel could have been spent as a ghostwriter. It’s kind of difficult to get more out of life when you worry about things like this. What I need to realize is that I will never know my potential unless I put in the effort.
Figuring Out a Schedule
One of my biggest failings is that I cannot seem to get a set schedule that works for everything that is going on in my life. I call this a failing because I have been struggling with it for a couple of years now and still haven’t learned anything from it. I know how valuable a schedule is and how it can help me achieve my dreams. Unfortunately, it’s just not working out well.
Committing to a Schedule
Like everything else, it’s the effort which goes into maintaining a schedule I seem to lack. I am easy to sidetrack with randomness. As a result, I find it difficult to maintain my work ethic. Sure, I can put blame on my various situations. What it all boils down to is my own lack of commitment. I need to go beyond the needs of others and concentrate on my own for once.
Covering the Bases
If I want to get more out of life and succeed at reaching my goals, I need to make sure I cover the bases. I need a plan for when the workflow is low. I need an alternative to income which will reduce the strain on the household. In reality, I need to commit more to what I advise people to do on this website. Above all else, I need to at least try to make more out of my situation.
Crawling Out of the Rut
It’s easy to be stuck in the rut of your comfort zone. It’s this rut that is causing the most problems. If I want to get more out of life, I need to figure a way out of this mundane lifestyle. This is part of the reason why I started blogging. I figure it would give me a chance to flex a few literary muscles while I work throughout the day. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gone according to plan. I am in the same place I was months ago.
What Can I Do to Change?
Change is difficult for many people. In many situations, it’s necessary to change to get more out of life. The problem I have, as well as many others, is a lack of commitment to this change. Be it habitual, circumstantial or financial, there is always something that can get in the way. However, I need to figure it out if I want to be more than I am today. A lot of the time, I’ll simply forget that I wanted to make adjustments until its too late in the day.
What I need to do is sit down and come up with a plan that I can remember and stick to. I have a lot of great ideas, I just need structure to see them through. So, that is what I’ll do. I’ll create a plan of action and start July with a whole new way of doing things. Even if I have to leave little sticky notes on my monitor, anything I can do to improve myself as a whole is a success towards getting more out of life.
I didn’t mean for this post to be a personal rant. In fact, I had a far more different idea when I first started. Sometimes, you just need to get things off your chest. For me, it’s quite therapeutic. It gives me a chance to visualize my issues and discover ways to improve myself. After all, that is the difference between success and failure: learning.
It’s OK to keep your head in the clouds once in a while. Just make sure you stay grounded. High aspirations and dreams can be achieved as long as you’re willing to put in the effort. Although I’m not the novelist I’d like to be, I am still one hell of a ghostwriter. If I can take comfort in anything, it’s that my clients are very happy with my work.
