There are a number of reasons why people like the idea of working for themselves. Some of the most common motivators include schedule freedom and being your own boss. However, there are several other more practical reasons why you should consider freelance writing. As long as your capable of handling yourself in a professional way and provide quality work, it can be quite a lucrative opportunity.
Why I Consider Freelance Writing to Be Beneficial
Of course everyone is going to have their own personal views as to why anyone should do anything. After all, most of the knowledge we gain as a species is through personal experience. So, here are some of the best reasons why I consider freelance writing to be a superior career. Keep in mind, this is all based on personal experience.
I live in a rural area where the job opportunities are somewhat lacking. In fact, I found that writing for four hours per day paid me more than any job in town working twice that much. As a result, I quit my regular full-time job and started writing all the time.
I’m not saying that you’ll have the same experience. I worked hard to get the clients I have and keep the workflow going. However, the potential is great if you want to make more money than you do at your current job.
And don’t quit your regular job right off the bat. I worked for a little more than a year while writing on the side before I was ready to consider freelance writing full-time. It takes a special kind of person to keep themselves motivated and driven when there are no bosses above you staring down at your progress.
A Wide Open Market
Because content marketing is such an important part of search engine optimization, there are always clients looking for writers. Personally, I use Textbroker for most of my interactions. However, there are a lot more out there that have great potential for making a great deal of money from home.
This doesn’t include the number of clients I have offline as well. For instance, I’ve created a lot of content for local businesses to help boost their standing in search engines. Work for a writer goes far beyond just the few sites I have listed on Writer Sanctuary. But keep in mind, the sites I feature here I have verified as legitimate as they have paid me in the past.
One of the best ways to get more work as a freelancer is to diversify yourself. Don’t stick with just one platform for finding work. Personally, I check back and forth between Textbroker, Fiverr and HireWriters.
I Am In Control
I am in control of my own progress. In most instances, I can manage just how much money I am paid through superior work or by charging direct customers a certain amount per word. I am also in control of my own workload, productivity and professionalism. The only downside is not being able to control the flow of work. But, it’s easy to avoid low-flow days if you market yourself on more than just one platform.
If I wanted to hit the golf course this morning before actually getting to work, I can. I have absolute control over my schedule and daily routines. Just remember that when you consider freelance writing as a career, you need to offer a professional appearance. This means that even though you control your schedule, clients will still need work done on time.
I Love to Write
Even though I don’t get to see my name sitting next to a brilliant piece I write for a client, I still relish the thought that someone enjoys my work. I love to write in virtually any form, which is why I run two blogs on a regular basis. If you don’t enjoy writing, then freelancing as a ghostwriter may not be a wise choice. It can easily turn into something you hate doing over time.
I recently had a client tell me how one of the pieces I wrote for her had more shares on social media than many other pieces they had. It makes me feel good that I am doing something that can help others while getting a bit of pay for my efforts. I love my job, and will continue to do it until I win a billion dollar Powerball. Or, at least, until I become a popular author.
The Opportunity to Learn
Over the past 5,000 orders I’ve completed since starting in 2012, I have learned a great deal. Since I am not afraid to cover a new topic, it’s fun for me to explore different industries.
For example, I started writing for computers and technology. Now, I enjoy travel articles and business pieces as well. Lately, I have been spending a great deal of time on health articles.
If you enjoy exploring the different facets of humanity, consider freelance writing. You’ll never know what you’ll learn next.
Can Be Done From Anywhere
Probably one of the most amazing parts about freelancing is the ability to work from anywhere. If I go on vacation to see my family in Utah, my work goes with me. In fact, I’ll work on a few pieces for clients when I am sitting in the hotel in South Denver waiting for the in-laws to show up for Christmas.
It’s nice to know that I don’t have to worry about losing my job if I were to move from Colorado to California. A lot of my clients aren’t even located in the United States to begin with. As long as I can access a computer, I can work. It’s that simple.
When you consider freelance writing, bare in mind that it’s not always going to be a bed of roses. It can be an upward hike, especially if it’s something you don’t really want to do. I worked hard to get where I am. And I’ve found it to be a completely rewarding and lucrative opportunity. I really can’t wait to experience what happens next.
